What about shopping & dining out?
Stores are everywhere and are open almost every day, although some are closed for a rest time in the early afternoon. You can find many western foods at a higher price, and things that can substitute for western foods are available, but you will gradually develop an eating style that fits the available food. (Come armed with your grandma's recipes for making things from scratch!) Dunkin Donuts and Papa Ron’s Pizza Restaurant are the western style eateries in Sentani.
Lots of inexpensive fresh foods such as vegetables, tropical fruits (some you've never imagined), meats (including ocean fish), spices that originate here (remember learning about the Spice Island that attracted Dutch trading companies?) and several kinds of rice are abundantly available at the local Indonesian market. Asian style restaurants and street stalls preparing fast food are also relatively inexpensive.
Haircuts are very inexpensive, around $5.00 for women and less for men. Soap and hair care products are also readily available, including some western brands. Deodorants and shaving creams often preferred by Americans are not available here.
Unless you are small, finding clothing to fit will be a challenge. Inexpensive shoes are readily available, but only in the small-medium size range.
