What about living on campus?
Many short-term teachers choose to live in apartments on campus, a beautiful tree-lined five-minute walk from the classrooms. These apartments get plenty of breeze since they are located on the crest of the hill.
Some of the apartments are also partially or fully air-conditioned. They vary in size from one-bedroom, one-bath to three-bedroom, two-bath. The water from the tap is safe to drink. The electricity is (usually) reliable because of a back-up generator. In Indonesia, the electricity is normally 220 V, but the apartments on campus have transformers for both 220 V and 110 V outlets. Maintenance is done by the school and all fees are paid through one's school account - very convenient. Those living on campus often get together for fun. Grocery stores are within walking distance and a school car is available for rent if walking home up the hill with a load of groceries is too daunting.
The director's home is between the teachers' apartments and the hostels, also along the crest of the hill. It is a four-bedroom, two-bath home with a beautiful view of the mountain and the valley... and of our favorite flamboyant tree out front.
Once teachers know the language and are comfortable with driving, they usually live "off the hill," renting a home among the rest of the Sentani community.
